Selling fighting fish In singapore market long-long ago

One of my uncle from Singapore come to stay at our house, two days ago he told me about those day how he rear betta in those day he was still a boy, around fourty years back. He and his friend spawn the fish by putting a pair of fish in a tank and put in the dark place. Next after the fish have lay the egg on the bubble nest, they quickly took the female fish out from the tank and left the male to take care the young. for the next few week they will try to catch some live food (daphnia) in the drain, earth worm by digging a hole here and there. finally when the fish grow big enough they will took them to the market to sell, each fish sold 20 cent at that time. Most of the time they can spwan around one thousand fighting fish from a pair of fish. Now i think for kid in Singapore can never have this type of hobby...

Hey, can you please tell me more about fighting fish? And how long ago did your uncle sell them? I am learning about what kids did in 1970 and hope to find more info about fighting fish.

Anyway, how do you raise yours? Train them? what do you feed them? etc

Can you tell me?
Thanks!

Hi, Mez,
For me fighting fish is quite unique, it is not a easy breed before you get good at it.I have been rearing fish since i was in the secondary school till now, but i start to real betta about 5 years ago, because it is not as easy as rearing guppy or mollies (my own point of view). First we should choose a pair of betta, make sure the female with round belly, when put them together, the fish do not fight and if happen that they fight please don't spawn them, one of the fish will die. If the fish like each other you will see the male fish start making bubble nest and within 1-2 days you can see the egg om the nest and is time to separate the female from the breeding tank and leave the male to take care of the fish. Few day later you will see the fry start to move freely and is time to feed them by live food like daphia or green water, if you don't have any of this can try on boiled egg yolk. Slowly the fish will grow up to the size that you want.To be frank, my surviving rate of the fish is still about hundred over fish. That the reason why i write this blog hope that someone who is expert on this can help. You may read the blog that i posted last year on rearing fighting fish.

I' m not sure how long my uncle sell the fish, what he mention was on part time basis. As you see those day there is forest any where in Singapore, they are still staying in a house not a flat. And should be around 1970. I suggest if you can leave down your e-mail, i can write more to you. Thanks for reading my blog

Hi Tgp
Thanks for reply. Would love to get more info. I'm at siblingmerxatyahoo dotcomdotau.
I need some really specific information about fighting fish in 1970s: where did kids catch them? What did they us to catch? How did they store them? Did they "train" them to fight? What did they eat? Did they sell them? Did they breed them? etc.... anything your uncle could remember would be GREAT! Not about professionally selling them but about kids play. Thank you so much for your help.
